
An inventor working for an organization that innovates for people who are visually impaired sought to develop a product that could unhook a service dog’s collar from the leash, allowing the dog to roam freely without dragging the leash around. The product needed to be universal, compatible with existing leashes, and the target audience wanted to wear the transmitter device like an old-school pager that connects wirelessly to their dog’s collar. They also desired haptic feedback to confirm a successful release. Henway happily accepted the job to design, prototype, and produce the custom electronics for this device, considering the company’s price, size, and battery life requirements.
By the end of the first phase, Henway explained the benefits of using a Bluetooth LE link between the transmitter and collar mechanism and confirmed we could meet the production price target. We estimated the device would achieve 3.5 years of battery life using a single AA battery with several uses per day. The first phase ended with presenting a 3D CAD model of the circuit. Within six weeks of Phase 1 approval, the customer had validated custom electronics that met the product’s requirements. The customer was very happy with the result.
