Small vs. Large‑Scale PCB Manufacturing: Your Best Path for 5 to 5,000 Units

By Roy

Henway Technologies is purpose‑built for small‑scale PCB manufacturing – and for scaling you up without drama. We specialize in 5 to 5,000 units per run, quoting against your projected volume (not just the first batch), and structuring blanket POs with scheduled releases so you get better pricing, predictable output, and room to tweak the design as you go without scrapping entire lots.

Henway’s definitions (and why they matter)

  • Small‑scale: ~5–100 units (on-shot production volume)
  • Mid‑scale: ~100–1,000 units (on-shot or scheduled releases)
  • Large: up to ~5,000-10,000 units per PO (planned production)

No MOQ. No minimum lot charge. No setup fees. Typical tooling is a solder‑paste stencil (~$300) that we reuse across orders.

The power move: blanket POs with release schedules

When customers place a half‑year or full‑year worth of PCBs on a single PO and schedule releases, we can:

  • Aggregate demand and buy smarter (better part pricing, fewer surprises)
  • Balance the production floor so units ship steadily
  • Keep some inventory as parts rather than finished goods—so if you change the design mid‑stream, we adjust without wasting a full lot

Pricing dynamics & breakpoints

Per‑unit costs are highest at very low quantities – it’s common that 10 units cost more than half of 40 units. You’ll see meaningful drops around ~100~1,000, and ~5,000. We’ll shop the BOM, time up buys, and recommend alternates to land the best total cost.

  • Setup/NRE: No setup fees; typically just a ~$300 stencil, amortized across orders
  • Quoted to your projection: If you’re planning thousands over the year but starting with a few hundred, we account for that in pricing

Lead times & partials

  • Small/Growth runs: 2–3 weeks standard; ~1‑week expedite often possible (PCB fab may add cost; we typically don’t add assembly labor premiums just for speed)
  • Large runs: ~5–6 weeks is typical. We routinely ship partials early so you can begin builds, pilots, or installs while we complete the balance.

DFM that grows with you

  • Light DFM (included): Checks your BOMPCB fabrication specs, and confirms special requests are captured and documented – often in 1–2 days.
  • Advanced DFM / Gap Analysis (as needed): An engineer verifies the design is likely to work as intended, substitutes out‑of‑stock parts, and can edit PCB routing or firmware with your approval. This is optional and scoped to your goals.

Sourcing models: turnkey, consigned, and hybrid

We accept consigned parts and do full‑turnkey on PCB components. We also coordinate plastics, cables, conformal coating, keypads, and other custom items with your vendors so those parts enter our production flow without adding work to your team.

Offshore vs. domestic: be strategic

Overseas pricing can look great on paper – until quality drift, part substitutions, or rework show up. If you don’t have in‑house rework capability, local fixes can erase the savings. We’ll help you weigh the trade‑offs, and if/when the time is right, we can take your PCBA to Asia and manage the transition while maintaining fixtures, tests, and documentation.

Quality, inspection & warranty

  • Workmanship: IPC‑A‑610 with ISO‑aligned processes
  • Inspection: AOI is standard; FAI & lot sampling happen internally (we can involve you anytime)
  • Warranty: 30 days on workmanship, extendable to 90 days in special cases

Choosing a partner: it’s more than price per board

The right CM should feel like an extension of your engineering + manufacturing team. Beyond a competitive unit price, look for:

  • Design feedback and troubleshooting (DFM, testability, cost drivers)
  • Willingness to work from your projected volume, not just the first PO
  • Ability to source, redesign, test, and box build under one roof
  • Openness to custom test setups/fixtures and flexible processes

How to start (fastest path)

Email [email protected] with:

  • BOM + Gerbers/ODB++/IPC‑2581 or native Altium/EAgle/KiCad, plus any firmware/test notes
  • Target quantity and whether you want a blanket PO with scheduled releases
  • Timing goals (standard vs expedite)

We’ll reply with pricing, timeline, and a tailored scale plan that calls out price breakpoints and partial‑ship options.
