Cost Factors in Small-Run PCB Assembly Projects

Small-run PCBA carries many of the same fixed steps as a big run (stencils, machine programming, first-article checks, DFM/test planning). Because those fixed tasks are spread over fewer units, per-board price climbs unless you plan quantity and testing deliberately.

A simple cost formula (and a worked example)

Formula (per order):
Total = NRE/setup + (BOM × markup) + assembly labor/machine + testing/programming + packaging/shipping + (optional rush)

  • BOM: $80 × 25 = $2,000 → with 30% markup = $2,600

1) Setup Costs Don’t Scale Down (NRE)
