When a mathematician, a tennis player, and a member of the Smithsonian Institution approached Henway Engineering for a consultation, we were all ears.
The team brought with them a unique and ambitious idea: to design and sell a portable device that could measure the tension of tennis racket strings. They had already developed mathematical formulas that could predict the tension by dropping a weight onto the racket and measuring the response, but they needed a way to gather the necessary acceleration data electronically. With a clear vision but no knowledge of electronics, they turned to us to bring their concept to life.
The enthusiasm for the project was contagious, and we were excited to work with them. We discussed various approaches, considering the fastest way to market, the most cost-efficient methods, and how to optimize their experience in collecting the data needed to validate their theories. We also spent considerable time defining the user experience, ensuring that the final product would be both practical and user-friendly.
We ultimately settled on a design allowing them to conduct thousands of tests wirelessly, eliminating the need for cumbersome cables. The custom electronics we developed automatically transmitted acceleration data to a PC after each impact, enabling rapid testing and data collection. To ensure that the device would be ready for mass production without needing a costly redesign, we carefully selected components that were suitable for high-volume manufacturing from the outset.
The final system featured a range of advanced sensors, including high-G single-axis accelerometers and 9-axis IMUs, along with a microprocessor, Bluetooth Low Energy module, USB charging capabilities, LED mux circuit, and multiple DC/DC converters. One distinctive element was the dot matrix LED display—a feature our client was passionate about, despite its cost and size implications.
