Surgeons with a knack for product development have always fascinated me. During one of our onboarding conversations, we listened to a surgeon share valuable exercise tips, such as advice to not stop exercising after 20 minutes but rather consider this as the starting point for your workout. He backed up his statements with scientific facts about the human body.

When it was time for the meeting to begin, the surgeon showcased his biometric sensor, capable of measuring muscle expansion and contraction with incredible accuracy. This technology could inform you and your coaches when it’s time to push your exercise harder. The surgeon’s team confirmed that the sensor worked and was ready for market. The only thing left to do was to develop production-grade custom electronics to filter the analog signals, digitize data, and stream data to a mobile app. He heard about Henway through his network of colleagues and decided to give us a call.

When the project started, we guided his team through the challenges of small form factor, long battery life, and production cost targets, explaining the tradeoffs of each outcome at each step. In the end, the circuit board contained a Wheatstone bridge, op-amp filtering, an analog multiplexing circuit, USB-C charging, Bluetooth Low Energy, and a variety of LED colors to show status.

The picture shows his prototype. Raw data gets pushed to the mobile app, where it’s analyzed. Athletes receive notifications when it’s time for more strenuous exercise. Users can 100% control this device through the mobile app, including sampling rate, digital filtering settings, and so on.
